95th-minute victory
The Gunners secured an immensely important win in a duel with table leader Leicester. Though they were losing at half-time, they managed to overturn the match by two goals during the course of the second half. It was Danny Welbeck who scored the winner in the fifth minute of stoppage time. “It all worked out incredibly well in the end,” noted Petr who had once again performed two masterful saves.
How would you evaluate this important win?
We started out strong. Leicester had come over with lots of confidence due to their successfulness as of yet. But once I saw how active we were being, I knew we had a shot at winning it.
And then the penalty came, from which Leicester scored.
Unfortunately so—a penalty and a goal to walk away to the changing rooms with, which complicated things a bit. But then we all assured each other that we were doing well, had lots of opportunities and that we must not let panic get the better of us. Our opponents then played with ten men for a long time, and though Leicester are strong in the defensive, we created lots of scoring opportunities and generally developed high pressure. It was a matter of time before we’d score. The equaliser came in the right moment and there was still enough time for us to seize the win after all.
Even so you didn’t use a lot of your chances.
We were still confident that we could do something about that. We posed a threat from every attack or corner. The winning goal was hanging by a thread. In the end we were rewarded for our effort and the goal really could not have been scored by anyone else than Danny. It was extremely satisfying for him. He’d been having a rough couple of months. He was forced to go for another knee surgery right after coming back from his prior injury, and lost nine months in total. It was a pivotal goal.
You’re only losing two points on Leicester now.
It wasn’t looking too great at half-time. If Leicester had won, the gap would have turned into an eight-point one, which really is quite a bit. Then we would have needed them to lose three times which would have been quite tough. If we’d drawn with them, then the gap would have been five points, which isn’t exactly little either. This way we only need them to draw once and the difference will only be in scores. That’s why I keep saying it really is a pivotal win. On the other hand, there’s still tons of games left before the end of the season and we’re still to face the other strong teams.
You performed two spectacular saves during the first half. Which one was harder?
Probably the one after Vardy’s header. He was close to me and stayed on his feet. If I’d boxed the ball out, he would have sent it back into the goal. So I had to keep the ball under control and throw myself on top of it, which I somehow managed to do in the end. I was a bit lucky the ball stayed next to me.
What about Kante’s challenge from the 39th minute?
At one moment it seemed like the shot was going wide but then the ball curved over into the goal in an incredible manner. I really had to stretch to knock the ball away.
The match included a series of disputed moments, such as the penalty which was actually given and the penalties which strangely were not. What did you think?
It should be kept in mind that these games tend to be incredibly intense and that goes for the referees, too. Things happen in rapid sequences and the ref has a split of a second to make a judgement call. It follows that not all decisions can be a hundred per cent correct—they’re not robots. They surely did their very best. Almost every game brings its moments which could potentially be disputed. We, the players, are here to play football, whereas it’s up to the referee to make these calls. And sometimes it’s all but a walk in the park.
