A much needed win
The Blues have been on a winning streak. They secured their fifth win in a row by beating Manchester City 2-1 in the Premier League, with Fernando Torres scoring the final goal in the 90. minute.
“We really needed this win. We knew we had to obtain three points since Liverpool, Arsenal and Southampton had all won their matches and posed a threat to us. I’m happy we managed to cope with it, though, especially due to the fact that City are serious title contenders,” stated Petr.
“We were pretty active in the first half and could possibly have gotten further that just 1-0. Our opponent equalised right after the interval, though,” Petr referred to Agüero’s goal. “He struck it well but I made it even easier for him. I really should have been able to deal with the shot, if only I’d been one step closer to the near post. It was wasteful of me.”
Petr’s minor mistake notwithstanding, in the end the Blues walked away as victors thanks to Torres, who used the lack of communication between Hart and Nastasic to his benefit. “Fernando deserved the goal after that game. He’d already hit the post in the first half and this was his reward. He forced the defender to make a mistake and went on to score the winner,” said Petr. The top of the table remains to be quite even, with a four-point difference between the first and the sixth spot. Southampton, in particular, has been exceeding all expectations. “They’ve come a long way ever since Pochettino took charge of them. They defend well, are consistently successful during standard situations and they like to breakaway when you don’t expect them to. They have some above-average players like their Polish goalkeeper Boruc, for instance,” added Petr.
Chelsea will face Arsenal Tuesday in the League Cup, however Petr will not be joining them. “Coach said he would give a chance to those who haven’t gotten to play lately, so I’m going to have a couple of days off. Mark Schwarzer will replace me for the time being."
