Champions!!!
It has only been a year since Petr and the Blues won the Champions League and now they get to raise yet another trophy above their heads! Chelsea beat Benfica Lisbon 2-1 in the Europa League final. "It's an enormous achievement," declared Petr, who had even contributed with an impressive goal assist.
Petr, what does this trophy mean to you?
I just value it so much. It's a great achievement for the entire club because we've officially won two European cups during the course of two seasons. On top of that it was the first time we got to participate in that League and we won it right away.
This is your fourteenth trophy. How does this one rank compared to the other ones?
Second, right after the Champions League. It's a European cup and those are always hard to win. We knew all along that anything but a trophy would mean failure and so we went all-in.
What do you think about the cup itself?
It's really nice and pretty heavy... It felt divine to be able to raise it above my head.
Can you reveal what transpired in the dressing rooms after the game?
There was champagne, beer and a wave of euphoria. But a lot of exhaustion, as well. We flew back to London that night. Tonight we have the Chelsea Player of the Year awards to attend, training on Saturday and a match on Sunday. The season's not over yet.
Do you consider your win a lucky one?
I suppose it was our greater experience from other finals which ultimately helped us beat them. Benfica was brilliant, they were definitely the better team in the first half, but the trophy is ours.
Were you starting to come to terms with the fact that extra time would be ordered when the score remained 1-1 until the last moments of stoppage time?
I kept hoping we'd score a winner. When the final corner kick was given I had a flashback of last year's Champions League final in Munich where we'd scored under the same circumstances right before the end. It was a well rehearsed situation and bam, there it was.
You demonstrated a superb save of Cardoza's strike. Was that the most vital one?
I guess so, there wasn't a whole lot of time left and things would have become much worse if they'd scored. I evaluated the situation well.
Your assist to the first goal was a genuinely rare occurrence among goalkeepers.
It was crucial for me to save the header instead of knocking the ball out because Benfica players were swarming in the area in front of me. After that I looked forward and spotted Juan and Fernando in the front and so I threw the ball all the way to the centre spot. Mata managed to deflect the ball towards Torres, who went on to score the winner. I'm honoured to have assisted.
The Super Cup game featuring the winners of the Champions and Europa Leagues will be hosted on 30 August in Prague this year. Are you excited to go home?
I've been talking about this from the start. I'm really glad my wish has fulfilled. I'm pretty sure we'll end up facing Bayern. The third time's the charm.
