Chelsea's brilliant captain Petr is thrilled by advancement past United
Petr performed incredible moves in the FA Cup quarter-final replay against Manchester United and led the Blues to a victory. Chelsea won 1-0 at Stamford Bridge with the striker Demba Ba scoring the sole goal.
Petr put a stop to one of the first threatening goal opportunities in the 41. minute when Hernandez had a go from far out. "The ball swerved a lot, perhaps by a metre or so. It happened in the very last moment, as well, which made it extreme. It wasn't very easy to kick the ball out considering the fact I was already lying on my back," described Petr.
Yet another stunning world-class save came in the second half when he bumped out Hernandez's header. "I can safely state that was one of the best saves of my career. I knew Hernandez was waiting at the back post and I leapt in there in order to cover as much space as possible. I was bracing for the fact that the ball could also bounce off in an awkward direction and I managed to stick my hand up in the very last split of a second. It was exceptionally difficult," said Petr. "Hernandez walked up to me afterwards and asked how on earth that was even possible."
The Blues' advancement was secured in the 49. minute by Demba Ba's stunning goal. "It was a sublime goal. It's not easy to properly strike a ball which flies in over your head. Great respect for being able to deflect it in the goal. Everything about it was incredible. Demba had actually scored an almost identical goal back when he was in Newcastle. You can tell this was no coincidence, he's just that good."
Petr was very pleased by the advancement. "We played in a very organised fashion. It was generally a really hard game, although we probably should have tried to score from some of our breakaways. But we did well nevertheless," he said after the match.
Chelsea is to face Manchester City at Wembley in the semifinals. "We're all excited, it's going to be big. It's not going to be easy but we'll have to beat everyone if we want to win the FA Cup anyway. Therefore it's irrelevant if we play them now or say the finals," said Petr.
Chelsea were forced to play their second game in two days, however Petr was not showing any major signs of fatigue. "It's wasn't the first time we had to do that. Over Christmas it tends to be pretty much the same. We swapped some players while some had to stay on. The thing is you have to allow yourself some recovery time despite the short period of time. We had training on Sunday but I also watched TV for a while and played the drums, too. It's good to blow some steam off. That night we already had to check into the hotel, so I guess there was really no time for Easter," admitted Petr
