FA Cup win and praise for the Czechs
The Blues beat Watford 3-0 in the 3rd round of the FA Cup at Stamford Bridge with Petr in their goal, and thus qualified for the next phase. Petr maintained a clean sheet and generally saved the day on numerous occasions, such as his national team co-player Matej Vydra’s threatening strike.
“It’s good to be back on the winning wave after our loss with Tottenham. The match was by no means an easy one, though, particularly the first half. Didier Drogba had one major scoring opportunity which was however disposed of by their goalie. We were failing to be assertive and Watford had almost as many shots on goal as we did,” said Petr.
Manager Mourinho made two changes at half-time by sending William and Costa on. “Our performance improved then, although Watford managed to get in one more major goal opportunity still at 0-0. After a quick counter-attack there was a cross into the box, which then brushed on Gary Cahill and the ball changed directions. Thank god I managed to kick it out, otherwise it would have been an own goal,” Petr described.
“But two minutes later William scored the first goal and that got us back on track. We got the opponent under pressure and suddenly had more scoring opportunities, too. When we then scored the second and soon thereafter the third goal, you could feel Watford were a bit startled,” Petr stated.
He was pleased with his clean sheet, which could easily have been spoiled by his fellow Czech Matej Vydra who had been sent on in the 65th minute. “He took the shot dangerously close to the box. It was going to go right under the crossbar but I dealt with it,” explained Petr. “I’m glad to have retained the clean sheet, as always. I couldn’t be happier with my own performance. I’m glad I got to play once again. The FA Cup is the oldest football competition in the world and is therefore very traditional. I love these games. The atmosphere was impeccable mainly due to all the fans who had come to show some support.”
Petr then expressed his praise for both Czech Watford players: Daniel Pudil and Matej Vydra. The former was on from the start, the latter was on for 25 minutes. “Dan did an amazing job, loved it. He was consistent, precise and backed the offence on the left side whenever he could. He really did great, and ran around quite a bit. Matej got a scoring opportunity shortly after he was sent on and assisted in further attacks ever since,” Petr commended his national team co-players.
