Five goals against Manchester and advancement
As intense as the game was, Chelsea managed to defeat Manchester United and advance to the quarter-finals of the CapitalOne Cup, where they now face Leeds United on 19 December. After 90 minutes the score was 3-3; after 30 minutes of extra time, the Blues could celebrate a spectacular 5-4 victory.
The fans must have loved the match. What did the players think?
This is exactly the Chelsea vs Manchester United battle the world wants to see. After last Sunday's game which didn't go particularly well due to things that surrounded it, but this was an amazing turn around. Both teams played well; I am glad that we were able to forget about what happened on Sunday and played a new game in pursuit of a brand new victory instead. Thanks to this fact, the game was a pleasure to watch. On top of that, especially the offence did a great job on both sides. There was a lot of suspense all the way till the end, nine goals altogether. It must have been a fantastic show for those who were watching but for me as a goalkeeper and perhaps for the coaches it wasn't always easy.
Was that because of the defence's errors?
That's what happens in football. Manchester United scored the first two goals due to to our mistakes. It wasn't easy because we found ourselves losing three times in the match and were forced to come back. In any case, the fact that we were able to recover and make a comeback three times in a row against such a strong team is definitely a positive sign.
In the end you were inches away from losing but the penalty before the 3-3 goal was in the last minute of the second half?
That was just an obvious result of the pressure we'd been putting Manchester United under. In moments like these you need luck as well, but we were rewarded for not giving up prematurely.
The game was full of emotion, three penalty kicks were given. There was one time when you even had to start calming your teammates down after Oscar and Nani's scuffle.
As a captain you should always try to make the referee's job easier. He needs to be able to evaluate the situation, which won't happen if he's surrounded by ten people. That's why I dragged my guys away.
If we add up the goals from your game and those from Tuesday's Reading vs Arsenal match, we get the breathtaking 21 goals in 2 games. What did you think about that?
I actually watched the Arsenal game and I remember asking myself how on earth twelve goals could be scored all of a sudden when any other time it would most likely be something like 1-0. Back then I had no idea that yesterday's game would be very similar. Perhaps this is why people go to watch football matches.
Did you consider this victory a sort of remedy for last Sunday?
Not in the slightest. It was another match, another competition. I'm happy we've advanced, there is a lot of good teams which are already out. It would be nice if we could make it all the way to the final in February. We'd be playing at Wembley and games like these are always worth the effort. If we won the Cup, we could theoretically have two trophies by the end of February, with the Club World Cup taking place in December as well.
