I really value my new record
Petr has irrevocably rewritten Chelsea’s old history books. In the Premier League match with Hull he secured his 209th shut-out for the Blues and thus broke Chelsea goalkeeper legend Peter Bonetti’s record. “I really do value this record, it’s a large number,” said Petr after the 2-0 win.
“It’s definitely something I’ll be putting on my CV. I certainly hope this wasn’t my last clean sheet for the Blues. We’ll see which number I end up arriving at by the end of my career,” stated Petr. “What I’m the happiest about is the fact that we beat Hull. It wasn’t simple and I’m glad we managed to break through their defences in the second half,” said Petr who was particularly busy warding off the opponent’s goal opportunities in the first half.
He was congratulated on his new record after the game by the manager, as well as all of his teammates. “I kept the jersey I played in to remember this match by. It doesn’t happen every day, after all. I might have the guys sign it for me,” revealed Petr.
He was very pleased by the three points the Blues earned. “I’ve said this before but if we’d drawn with them the record would be pretty much worthless, at least to me. I’d much rather win 2-1 and get three points. Therefore our result is nothing short of spectacular.” According to the Premier League official statistics Petr has arrived at 150 clean sheets. He is therefore within reach of David James’ record of 169 clean sheets. “I’m still reasonably young and the more of them I attain, the better both for the team and myself. The Premier League record is the next goal of mine. It’ll be interesting to see when, if even, I’ll get to that number.”
Chelsea manager José Mourinho expressed his appraisal after the match. “Petr has been playing at the top for ten years now and he’s been bringing home one clean sheet after another. As of now he’s beaten Mr Bonetti’s record but I think that he’ll have broken the Premier League record by next year. Petr’s becoming a historic figure in the Premier League, he’s been around since 2004. He’s also getting a lot of appearances and 30 to 35 tends to be the best stage in a goalkeeper’s career.”
Much like Mourinho, Peter Bonetti who worked as a goalkeeper coach at Stamford Bridge during the 1980s did not have anything but admiration for Petr.
“Petr Cech is brilliant at what he does, he’s one of the best goalkeepers I’ve ever seen. His record speaks for himself. I admire him greatly, he’s been incredible, and still has a long time to go. He is relatively young and could still go on to break more and more records. Plus he’s a fantastic person. when I first met him he was a real gentleman. I went to wish him well when he first joined and it was like we'd known each other for years. Whenever I see him he is very courteous and eager to say hello. He’s a very genuine person.”
Last but not least, Frank Lampard reacted to his teammate’s achievement.
“Pete has been one of the best goalkeepers for many, many years. He’s unbelievable particularly in the year we won the Champions League, looking back on the final and the games towards the final and how much he saved us. I don’t think he got enough recognition for it on a world scale. One of the downsides of being as consistent as him is maybe people do get used to you being that good. We’re very lucky to have him."
