Lacrosse, a sport with roots in the cultural tradition of Native Americans, has a new fan. Petr became the ambassador of Czech Women’s Lacrosse Team. “I couldn’t refuse that,” he said.
Who knows if the national team could have gone to the Women’s Lacrosse World Cup, which starts on the 12th of July in England, if it wasn’t for Petr’s help. He caught an appeal on social media saying the Czech Women’s Lacrosse Team didn’t have enough financial resources, so he asked his colleagues from the Sport Invest company, which represents him, for help. In the end, sponsors did put together the money, an estimated 1.6 million Czech crowns (around 60,780 EUR or 53,000 GBP).
“I’m really glad I was able to help the girls. They deserve to go, they qualified for the final tournament,” Petr said as he went to practice on the Radotín lacrosse field.
“The amount of money we needed was astronomical for us. Thank you, Petr!” said Dagmar Merrellová, the national team’s manager. Note that the players and the Czech Lacrosse Union need to co-fund their participation in the championship.
Unfortunately, Petr won’t be in England when the Czech lacrosse ladies try to take the world by surprise. He’s going to be at a training camp in Australia and China with Arsenal, so he will only watch the tournament from afar. “I knew lacrosse from TV, but this is the first time I actually tried my hand at it. It’s hard work, I’ll keep my fingers crossed for the girls,” he promised.
