One hundredth match in European cups
The game against Sparta was Petr's one hundredth jubilee match of the European cups and it is one that he will surely not forget as the Blues advanced to the semifinal. This is all the more due to the fact that Eden Hazard scored the winner in the 92. minute.
Petr, what is this jubilee to you?
A hundred cup games is quite an impressive amount. In order to reach it you've got to play for a team who consistently participates in these cups. If you get all the way to the Champions League finals, that's thirteen games for you, not to forget you don't always make it that far. You need at least 10 years for it. On top of that it's a lot harder for a goalie; you have to be number one. It's not like other players who get sent in for 2 minutes and that itself counts toward the total amount. As a goalkeeper it's either all or nothing.
Do you recall your first cup game?
You don't simply forget those. It was Autumn of 2001 and Sparta was to play Spartak Moscow in the Champions League on 12. September but the game got postponed due to the 9/11 attacks in New York City. Hence we ended up starting with Bayern Munich and the end result was 0-0. They might have hit the post but I walked away with a clean sheet and Sparta did great in general.
Do any other particular games come to mind?
There are obviously many more. Sparta also put up a great fight against Feyenoord Rotterdam who eventually went on to the UEFA Cup which they won. There were tons of memorable matches in Chelsea as well: the game against Barcelona, last year's final against Bayern, etc. It goes on in the Europa League, the Sparta games were my first very experience in this league. There's also no way I could forget about the games vs. Sparta Prague which constituted my very first Europa League experience. It was simultaneously the first time I got to play a Czech team since I'd joined Chelsea and it just so happened that the last game was a 100th jubilee and we even advanced.
Are you concerned about the fact that you weren't able to honour your jubilee game with a clean sheet?
The advancement is what actually matters. We worked quite hard for it, had a hard time finishing off our chances. Sparta did really well though, they have an ideally set up squad.
How many more European cup matches do you think you'll feature in?
It will all depend on how we do and how I myself get on, too. I've got to retain my position as number one goalie which I'm pleased to have managed to do in the previous hundred cup games, and if I do then there's more to come.
