Petr equals Bonetti’s record - 208 clean sheets
Petr was able to celebrate his 208th Chelsea clean sheet after the 3-0 win against Southampton. As of now he has equaled Peter Bonetti’s club record from the 1970’s. Bonetti hit 208 after 729 matches, Petr only needed 457.
“It’s a great honour. Bonetti belongs to the biggest legends in the club’s history and it’s a true achievement to have caught up with him. He works for the team as ambassador till this day and we often bump into each other at Stamford Bridge. I’ve seen him play a couple of times on Chelsea TV and even though football used to be a bit different back then, he was one of the very best for about twenty years. He’s remained a legend till today,” said Petr.
More than anything he was happy to have helped his team. “I’m glad to see my clean sheets have been making our way to the trophy easier. Throughout my engagement with Chelsea we’ve won both the Champions League the Europa League once, the Premier League three times, the FA Cup four times and the League Cup twice. That’s far more important to me than my personal stats,” stated Petr.
“The game with Southampton was challenging mainly due to the weather conditions. It was raining and it was particularly windy. We nevertheless managed to have an awesome game both in the offensive and the defensive. We had a plenty of scoring opportunities in the first half already, and when we then scored our opening goal in the second, we knew we were in the perfect position to get more aggressive. It was a successful game against a team which had been doing quite well at home. Our win was well-deserved.”
Chelsea additionally broke their Premier League curse; Fernando Torres, the author of the first goal, scored in an away game for the first time after more than a year’s wait. Curiously enough, last time had been in a match with Sunderland in 2012. “It may be coincidence but the main thing is that we’re still getting those goals in as a team. Our attackers have been outdoing themselves lately. Last time it was Samuel Eto’o, this time it was Fernando. I’m sure that’ll boost their morale for the upcoming games, too,” added Petr.
He spent New Year’s Eve at the hotel in Southampton along with his teammates and was pleased by the fact that Czech Tomas Kalas was able to join the team for the travels. He did not however get to participate in the match itself. “We didn’t make a huge deal out of it. We had some dinner and Tomas and I played some gold on our iPads. We had the opportunity to have some champagne at midnight but no one really did. I went to bed at half past eleven, didn’t bother staying up until midnight,” he revealed.
