The most intense atmosphere plus a decent result
The Blues drew with Galatasaray Istanbul 1-1 in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16. Petr did regret the goal he conceded, however he also admitted that the tie was indeed a fair result.
He is moreover quite optimistic as far as the retun game in London is concerned. "The draw is what we deserved, I think. Now we find ourselves in a position where any win at home will secure us advancement. There will be absolutely no underestimating; Galatasaray definitely demonstrated what they're capable of," said Petr.
Thanks to Torres Chelsea seized the lead just a few minutes into the match. "We then had lots of different scoring opportunities we should have executed more dilligently. Too bad we never did score a winner," stated Petr. After the interval it was the hosts who gradually began dominating. "We put everything into it in the first half and perhaps we'd got a little weary by the second one. All of a sudden we seemed to lose control and being backed by their incredible audience, Galatasaray took the opportunity." The Turkish team's pressure eventually led to an equaliser in the 64th minute. It was Chedjou who managed to send the ball past Petr's defences. "I took a step towards it but then I noticed Melo and Azpiliceuta who also posed a threat at that moment, so I was forced to retreat back into the goal. As the ball flew through the crowd there was no time left for me to save it," Petr described the crucial moment.
He was absolutely taken aback by the atmosphere at the stadium. "It was astonishing. The loudest I'd ever experienced. You could literally feel it when people started whistling and booing. Every now and then someone would chuck a lighter or a coin at me but luckily no one actually hit me," said Petr. "Their fans have really got their backs. It's not easy to play over here, they propell the team into action like nothing else possibly could," he added. After the game Petr met up with his friend and former teammate Didier Drogba. "He paid us a visit in the dressing rooms so we caught up a bit. I also got to see Tomas Ujfalusi in his new role, which was nice. It was great to see him again," Petr revealed.
