We all want the trophy
For the first time in history, Chelsea are participating in the Club World Cup. The team has been in Japan since Sunday and Petr would very much like them to return to London with a trophy.
You will be entering the tournament in a game against Monterrey. What can you expect from them?
I haven't been able to follow the Mexican league but I'm expecting a style of gameplay similar to that of their national team. The opponent's been here for longer than us and has therefore had more time to acclimatise, however there are no excuses to be made in that regard. We'll have enough info since we have specialists focusing on the opponent's behaviour. The coach specifies what he needs to know and they map it accordingly.
How have you been coping with your jet lag?
I always try to prepare myself for the time difference on the plane already, so I usually just need one or two days to get used to it. It tends to be a little harder going the other way but generally it's no big deal for me. We'll be all set by game day.
Do you accept the role of the top seed?
Corinthians and us have been put directly in the semi-finals, so I guess it's been pre-determined. We don't renounce the role and we'll do our best to live up to those expectations.
How much of a challenge does the trophy pose?
An immense one. It's a very prestigious Cup. Who else can raise a trophy above their heads mid-season? We all want it, even due to the fact that it would lift our spirits and put the team in a desirable position. Also, this is the first time we've gotten to participate.
Did you enjoy returning to Yokohama?
I played here in the summer of 2011 with the Czech national team. There's an amazing stadium with capacity for 70,000 people and it's also where the World Cup in 2002 took place. The atmosphere was pretty decent even though there's a track circuit surrounding the field.
Do you believe the fans will be on your side?
There probably won't be too many from England but due to Chelsea's popularity in Japan and entire Asia in general, we expect to have the majority cheering for us. Their passion for Chelsea's been palpable since we first set our feet on Japanese land.
New goal-line technology is to be used for the first time during this tournament. Are you glad to have lived to see it happen?
I'd been demanding that for ten years already. If something similar had been put into effect earlier, lots of irregular decisions wouldn't have been sustained. It's always better to wait for a while and make the right decision than to cause harm. I'm sure it'll work well and football as such will benefit from it.
