We'd like to start the Champions League with a win
Tomorrow is a big day for Chelsea who will host Basel at Stamford Bridge for the first round of the Champions League.
Are you excited to commence the Champions League?
It's the most prestigious football competition there is. Last year our participation didn't go according to plan, we never made it beyond the initial group. On the other hand, that enabled us to join the Europa League which we won. In general it was a major disappointment to have left the Champions League that way, especially since we were one of the trophy contenders. Now we've got another chance though and I'm sure it's going to be worth it.
What are your ambitions for this year?
We're going to attempt to keep winning right from the start and advance out of the group as soon as possible. We're not looking to forego our role as a favourite of the group.
How is Basel as your first opponent?
They haven't really changed much since last season. I remember our Europa League match was quite the hassle, despite the fact that in the end the score was 5-2 for us. I expect them to play just as well this time. Streller, their captain, probably poses the biggest threat for us, but they're generally very good at quick and unexpected break-aways. I hope we'll be able to deal with that, though; the first game is always important.
Do you expect the team to have recovered from last Saturday's defeat by Everton?
Winning the next game would certainly help forget all about the loss, and we'll have a chance to do just that on Wednesday. The first loss is always unpleasant but what's done is done. We're just going to focus on winning the next one.
